‘Big rope’ is a breeder term for a French Bulldog with a pronounced nose rope, the fold of skin above the nose. It describes the head, not the colour, and can appear in any colour.

The rope comes from head shape and skin, not from a single gene. Breeding a good big rope takes experience: we select for a full, rounded rope together with open nostrils and a well-built head, and only from parents with top results on every health marker.

The FCI breed standard for the French Bulldog recognises fawn, brindle and pied. Colours such as blue, lilac, isabella, chocolate and merle, and the long-haired fluffy coat, fall outside the standard, and some have been linked to health concerns, such as colour dilution alopecia in dilute dogs or deafness in double merles. We are open about this. It is why we never pair two merle dogs, why every parent’s full results are published, and why health and temperament decide each pairing, never colour alone.

Can a big rope French Bulldog breathe freely?
Yes. A big rope does not have to mean a blocked nose. We breed the rope together with open nostrils and a well-built head, and our big rope dogs breathe freely and quietly. Every parent's health results are published on the puppy's page.
How do I care for the nose rope?
Skin folds collect moisture and dirt. Wipe the fold gently a few times a week with a soft damp cloth or a vet-approved wipe, then dry it well. Redness, a smell or discharge are reasons to see your vet.

Can I choose the colour of my puppy?
You tell us your preferred colour when you apply. Colour can vary within a litter, so we match puppies by temperament and home first and tell you honestly which colours a planned litter can produce.
