What is a floodle French Bulldog?

‘Floodle’ is a breeder term for a French Bulldog with a furnished, textured coat: a beard, eyebrows and a soft wave or curl. It is a coat type, not a colour, and is not recognised by the breed standard. Genetically, it combines furnishings (F, the RSPO2 gene) with the curly gene (KRT71) and often the long-coat gene (l/l).

The genetics

GenotypeF (RSPO2) + KRT71 curly, often l/l

We want to be open about this: the furnishings gene does not come from the original French Bulldog population. It was introduced by crossbreeding with a furnished breed several generations ago and has since been bred within French Bulldog lines. If that matters to you, ask us and we will show you the pedigree and DNA results of both parents.

Appearance

A soft, wavy to curly coat with a gentle beard and eyebrows, in many colours.

Variations

Furnished

Beard and eyebrows from the furnishings gene.

Curly, one copy (C1)

One copy of the curly gene: a soft wave.

Curly, two copies (C2)

Two copies of the curly gene: a more defined curl.

Colour and the breed standard

The FCI breed standard for the French Bulldog recognises fawn, brindle and pied. Colours such as blue, lilac, isabella, chocolate and merle, and the long-haired fluffy coat, fall outside the standard, and some have been linked to health concerns, such as colour dilution alopecia in dilute dogs or deafness in double merles. We are open about this. It is why we never pair two merle dogs, why every parent’s full results are published, and why health and temperament decide each pairing, never colour alone.

Questions about floodle French Bulldogs

How do I care for a floodle coat?

Brush two to three times a week with a slicker brush and comb through to the skin to prevent tangles. Wipe the beard after meals, keep the hair around the eyes and between the paw pads trimmed, and plan for a groomer every two to three months.

Are floodle French Bulldogs healthy?

The coat genes have no known link to breathing or the spine, so a floodle has the same health needs as any French Bulldog. Because the line includes crossbreeding in its history, ask to see both parents’ DNA results and pedigree, which we share openly.

Can I choose the colour of my puppy?

You tell us your preferred colour when you apply. Colour can vary within a litter, so we match puppies by temperament and home first and tell you honestly which colours a planned litter can produce.
