What is a lilac French Bulldog?

‘Lilac’ is a breeder term, not a colour recognised by the French Bulldog breed standard. Genetically, a lilac dog has two copies of the dilution gene (d/d) together with a brown gene, usually cocoa (co/co) or, in some lines, B-locus brown (b/b).

Also called lavender.

The genetics

Genotyped/d + co/co or b/b

Both genes are recessive, so a lilac puppy needs a copy of each from both parents. The dilution gene lightens the brown pigment to a soft lilac-grey, which also shows in the nose, pads and eyes. Every parent’s dilution and brown loci are confirmed by DNA before a pairing is planned.

Appearance

Coat from pale silver to warm lavender, often with light amber or blue-grey eyes. Tan points (lilac and tan) and pied markings also occur.

Variations

Lilac and tan

Lilac with tan points on the face, chest and legs.

Lilac pied

Lilac patches on a white base.

Colour and the breed standard

The FCI breed standard for the French Bulldog recognises fawn, brindle and pied. Colours such as blue, lilac, isabella, chocolate and merle, and the long-haired fluffy coat, fall outside the standard, and some have been linked to health concerns, such as colour dilution alopecia in dilute dogs or deafness in double merles. We are open about this. It is why we never pair two merle dogs, why every parent’s full results are published, and why health and temperament decide each pairing, never colour alone.

Questions about lilac French Bulldogs

Are lilac French Bulldogs healthy?

Colour on its own does not decide health, but dilute colours such as lilac carry a known risk of colour dilution alopecia (CDA): thinning hair and flaky skin, usually from young adulthood and mainly in the dilute areas. Not every dilute dog is affected, and there is no DNA test that predicts it. We breed from parents with sound coats and skin and publish every parent’s test results.

How much does a lilac French Bulldog cost?

Our lilac French Bulldog puppies start from €6,500. The price of an individual puppy depends on its confirmed genetics and sex and is shown on the puppy’s page.

Can I choose the colour of my puppy?

You tell us your preferred colour when you apply. Colour can vary within a litter, so we match puppies by temperament and home first and tell you honestly which colours a planned litter can produce.
