French Bulldog health testing and DNA

Every French Bulldog we breed from is DNA-tested and graded for breathing before it is paired. Colour is the result of careful genetics, never the goal on its own.

Our standard

Carrier policy

We never pair two carriers of the same condition. A carrier may be paired with a dog that is clear, so no puppy can be affected.

Laboratory DNA panels

Every parent's DNA panel is run by a laboratory, and the laboratory is named on each certificate.

Moderate structure

We select for open nostrils, sound structure and moderate type. A striking colour never outweighs health or temperament.

Results before you reserve

Both parents' results are published on their profiles, so you see them before you reserve, not after.

Markers tested on every French Bulldog parent

What each test looks for, in plain words.

  • CMR1
    Canine multifocal retinopathy

An inherited eye condition that causes small blisters on the retina and can affect vision.

  • DM
    Degenerative myelopathy

A slowly progressing disease of the spinal cord in older dogs that weakens the hind legs.

  • HUU
    Hyperuricosuria

High uric acid in the urine, which can form bladder and kidney stones.

  • JHC
    Juvenile hereditary cataract

Clouding of the lens that develops in young dogs and can impair sight.

  • CDDY / IVDD
    Chondrodystrophy and disc disease risk

Shows whether a dog carries a gene variant linked to early disc degeneration and back problems.

  • BOAS
    BOAS functional grading

A vet assesses breathing before and after a short exercise test and gives a grade from 0 to 3. Lower is better.

  • Colour
    Colour loci

DNA confirms which colour and coat genes a dog carries, so each puppy's colour is predictable and merle is never doubled.

Colour genetics

Rare colours such as blue, lilac, isabella and merle are the result of specific genes. We confirm every parent's colour loci by DNA, we never pair two merle dogs, and each puppy's expected colour genetics are documented.

Colour and the breed standard

The FCI breed standard for the French Bulldog accepts fawn and brindle, with or without white. Blue, lilac, isabella, chocolate, merle and the long-haired fluffy coat fall outside it, and some colours have been linked to health concerns, such as alopecia in dilute dogs or deafness in double merles. That is why health and temperament decide each pairing, never colour alone.

Other checks, where relevant

Depending on the dog, a vet may also examine the kneecaps (patella), take a spinal X-ray, or run a BAER hearing test, which is relevant for merle dogs. Where such a check has been done, the result is shown on that dog's profile.

Every puppy's documents

Health results and certificates are published on each puppy's own page. You can read them before you apply.

Questions

Do you breed from carriers?

A carrier may be used, but only with a partner that is clear for the same condition. We never pair two carriers of the same condition, so no puppy can be affected.

When can I see the parents' results?

Before you reserve. Each breeding dog's results are on its profile, and each puppy's page shows both parents' results and the puppy's own documents.

Which laboratory do you use?

The laboratory is named on each parent's certificate, which you can open from the breeding dog's profile.

Does DNA testing rule out every health problem?

No. A DNA test only rules out the specific inherited conditions it tests for. That is why we also grade breathing, select for moderate structure and have every puppy checked by a vet before it leaves.
